Japanese fastener manufacturer YKK, known as one of the global leaders in zipper production, has announced the world’s first automatic zipper for clothing. The development, named Auto-Closing Zipper, combines a self-fastening mechanism with a compact electric motor built directly into the zipper slider, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing The Verge.

The innovative fastener is activated via remote control or an external signal. Once triggered, the motorized slider autonomously moves along the entire length of the zipper, securely joining the fabric edges. To unzip, it’s enough to manually shift the slider slightly—this activates a reverse mechanism that fully opens the zipper.

YKK emphasizes that this new technology has potential for broad use in medical, rehabilitation, consumer, and even military sectors. It is also expected to be especially useful for individuals with limited mobility or musculoskeletal disorders.

The Auto-Closing Zipper was presented as a prototype, and the company has not yet announced when the innovative fastener will enter mass production. It is only known that the development responds to the demand for more inclusive clothing solutions.
