US Mint releases the 2026 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin at $173, offering collectors and investors a 92% premium over spot silver.

The United States Mint has announced the release of the 2026 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin, a collectible and investment-grade silver coin set to go on sale at 12 noon (ET) on February 26, 2026, priced at $173, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the official US Mint release. Each coin contains exactly 1 troy ounce (31.103 grams) of .999 fine silver, ensuring 99.9% purity, and measures 40.6 mm in diameter and 2.98 mm in thickness, reflecting a robust design prized by collectors and investors alike.

The American Eagle Silver Proof Coin belongs to a long-standing tradition of US Mint silver bullion products, now in its 2026 iteration. Proof coins are distinct from bullion and burnished versions due to their meticulous manufacturing process, which creates a mirror-like finish on the background with frosted reliefs. While standard bullion coins provide exposure to the silver market at near-spot prices, proof coins carry a premium, largely reflecting their collectible value and the guaranteed authenticity from the US Mint.

Currently, international silver trades around $90 per ounce, yet the 2026 Proof Coin is offered at $173, representing an approximate 92% premium. Standard Brilliant Uncirculated American Silver Eagles, as of early February 2026, fluctuate between $95 and $165 depending on market conditions. The premium for proof coins is influenced by factors including the coin’s production year, mint mark, and demand among collectors seeking numismatic significance or investors desiring verified silver exposure.

This year’s American Eagle Silver Proof Coin is produced at the West Point facility and bears the “W” mint mark. Its obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty, re-sculpted in 2021 to restore the artist’s original intent and include his traditional mark. The reverse depicts a landing eagle carrying an oak branch, a design symbolizing strength and endurance. Since their introduction in 1986, American Eagle Silver Proof Coins have served as collector-focused counterparts to the standard bullion issues, combining investment-grade silver with artistic craftsmanship.

Investors can include American Eagle Bullion Coins in portfolios as a cost-effective means to hold physical precious metals, with gold coins available in multiple fractional sizes and silver, platinum, and palladium coins offered in one-ounce units. The US Mint does not sell directly to the public; buyers are advised to purchase coins through authorized online or physical precious metal dealers. The price for previous editions, such as the 2018 one-ounce Silver Eagle, ranges from $107.28 to over $11,000 for bulk lots of 100 coins, reflecting variations among different versions and seller platforms.
