Nicolás Maduro trial date could be set for June 2027 as prosecutors and defense lawyers prepare motions in the Manhattan drug trafficking case.

Nicolás Maduro trial date negotiations have moved toward June 2027 in Manhattan federal court. Prosecutors and defense lawyers submitted a joint timetable before Maduro’s latest hearing, as the Baltimore Chronicle newsroom notes.

Judge may approve the Nicolás Maduro trial date

Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, face drug trafficking and narco-terrorism charges. Both have pleaded not guilty and remain in federal custody in Brooklyn.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein must decide whether to approve the proposed schedule. The plan sets several deadlines before the possible June 2027 trial:

  • September 2026: defense motion based on sovereign immunity;
  • November 2026: oral arguments and delivery of most classified evidence;
  • January 2027: deadline for other pretrial motions;
  • June 2027: proposed start of the federal trial.

The timetable is not final. Both sides reserved the right to seek delays, particularly if classified evidence creates additional legal disputes.

What charges do Maduro and Flores face?

Federal prosecutors accuse Maduro and Flores of helping trafficking organizations move large quantities of cocaine into the United States. The case focuses on alleged cooperation with drug networks while Maduro controlled Venezuela’s government.

The defense plans to challenge Maduro’s prosecution through sovereign immunity arguments. Lawyers may also question the legality of the U.S. military operation that brought the couple to New York.

Why the case could face further delays

Prosecutors say most non-classified evidence has already been delivered. However, classified material requires additional review and security procedures.

Maduro previously declared: “I am innocent. I am not guilty.” He also insisted that he remained Venezuela’s legitimate president. The federal indictment does not concern election manipulation claims. It centers on alleged cocaine trafficking into the United States.
