One of the most common causes is drinking water from plastic bottles or low-quality containers that can release chemicals. This is especially noticeable if the bottle has been sitting in the sun for a long time or in a warm car. It is also worth paying attention to dishes, kettles or water bottles – sometimes they have an odor that is transferred to the water or food.

Interestingly, some people start to notice a plastic taste after changing the filter in their water filter or using new kitchen appliances.

Possible health problems

Medical causes should also not be ruled out. A chemical taste in the mouth sometimes appears as a side effect of medications, especially antibiotics or allergy medications. This symptom can also accompany liver or kidney problems, or even be a sign of poisoning.

Another possible cause is a disruption in the functioning of taste receptors. For example, after COVID-19, many people continue to have strange taste distortions for months. Sometimes the body reacts this way to a deficiency in zinc or vitamin B12.

What will help get rid of the unpleasant aftertaste?

First of all, eliminate household factors. Replace plastic dishes with glass or metal ones, check your water filter, and try drinking only boiled water for a while. If you use a toothpaste with a strong flavor or new mouthwashes, give them up for a few days.

Rinsing your mouth with baking soda or saline solution is also helpful. This helps neutralize any remaining substances that may have settled on the mucous membrane.

In your diet, you should focus on fresh foods rich in antioxidants — fruits, greens, citrus fruits. They not only improve the taste in your mouth, but also help your body cleanse itself of toxins.

When to see a doctor

If the taste persists for more than a week, and even more so if it worsens or is accompanied by other symptoms (nausea, weakness, dry mouth), it is better to consult a therapist. In some cases, the doctor may recommend tests for mineral levels, liver condition, or even refer you to a gastroenterologist.

You shouldn't tolerate discomfort – the body doesn't send signals without a reason. Sometimes even such a seemingly trivial thing as the taste of plastic helps to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
