Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece) has officially closed the investigation into Google’s digital advertising practices, which began in 2020, finding no evidence of monopolistic conduct, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Reuters.

The investigation by Cofece focused on Google’s advertising services provided through its search engine as well as third-party websites to determine whether the company held an excessive market advantage in the digital advertising sector.

Had Cofece found Google guilty of monopolistic behavior, the company faced fines of up to 8% of its annual revenue in Mexico. However, the probe concluded without any such findings.

A Google spokesperson commented on the decision, stating that it acknowledges the freedom advertisers have and their control over how they use Google’s tools in ways that best suit their needs.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, does not disclose specific revenue figures for Mexico in its earnings reports, but its 2024 annual results indicate that revenue from the “other Americas” region, which includes Latin America, amounted to approximately $20.4 billion.
