Donald Trump Lifts U.S. Sanctions Against Syria

Trump signs executive order lifting U.S. sanctions on Syria. The White House supports regional stability while keeping restrictions on Assad and his allies in place.

President of the United States Donald Trump has signed an executive order lifting U.S. economic sanctions against Syria. According to a statement from the White House, this move is part of a broader effort to restore stability and achieve peace, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the BBC.

The executive order states that the United States is committed to supporting a unified Syria that does not serve as a safe haven for terrorist organizations, protects its religious and ethnic minorities, and contributes to regional security and prosperity.

However, sanctions remain in place against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad—who has taken refuge in Russia—as well as against members of his family and supporters of the ousted regime.

Back in mid-May, Donald Trump announced his intention to lift sanctions on Damascus. He made the statement ahead of an official meeting in Riyadh with the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Immediately after the sanctions were lifted, President Trump held talks with Ahmed al-Sharaa. Washington emphasized that it would closely monitor the actions of the new Syrian authorities, particularly their efforts to normalize relations with Israel.
