Henry Cavill’s time in Netflix’s “The Witcher” has come to an end: starting from season four, the role of Geralt of Rivia will be played by Australian actor Liam Hemsworth. A first trailer for the upcoming season has already been released, showing him in battle against a ghostly creature, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing heise.
The replacement of Cavill by Hemsworth in “The Witcher” was first announced back in 2022, when Cavill himself shared the news with fans in an Instagram post. However, he continued to appear as Geralt through season three. His successor, Liam Hemsworth, is best known for his work in the “Hunger Games” films.
The debut season of “The Witcher” turned out to be a surprise success for Netflix and, for a time, became the platform’s most-watched series. However, later seasons drew growing criticism, particularly from fans of the books and video games, who accused the streaming giant of straying too far from the original material.
Fan reactions to Cavill’s departure have been largely negative. Ratings for recent seasons have already dropped, and with Cavill — the franchise’s most popular face — gone, many consider the series to be in decline. Comments under the season four trailer also lean heavily negative, though viewers largely blame Netflix rather than Hemsworth.
Cavill was especially beloved among fans because of his personal connection to the “Witcher” universe. He has repeatedly said he played CD Projekt’s “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” multiple times and had read Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels long before auditioning for the role.
Season four of “The Witcher” is set to premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2025.
