American actor James Ransone, known for "It: Chapter Two" and "The Wire," passed away at 46; preliminary reports suggest suicide.

American actor James Ransone, widely recognized for his roles in It: Chapter Two and the HBO series The Wire, has died at the age of 46, Baltimore Chronicle via Variety. Authorities discovered his body at his Los Angeles home after a welfare check on December 21, 2025.

According to preliminary findings from the Los Angeles County medical examiner, Ransone’s death is suspected to be a suicide. Law enforcement officers who investigated the scene did not find any signs of foul play, and additional details surrounding the circumstances of his death have not been publicly disclosed. Sources indicate that the actor passed away on Friday, December 19. The motives behind the incident remain unknown.

Ransone gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka in the second season of HBO’s The Wire. He also played Corporal Josh Ray Person in the miniseries Generation Kill, which focuses on the Iraq War.

To a broader audience, he became well known for playing the adult Eddie Kaspbrak in It: Chapter Two. Other notable credits include Sinister, Sinister 2, The Black Phone, What We Found, and V/H/S/85. Over his career, Ransone appeared in more than 70 film and television roles.

Born in 1979 in Baltimore, Maryland, Ransone studied at the Carver Center for Arts and Technology and later pursued film studies in New York. In his younger years, he struggled with substance abuse but successfully overcame it in the mid-2000s and resumed a stable acting career.

In 2021, Ransone publicly shared his traumatic experiences of childhood sexual abuse. He is survived by his wife and son.
