Prince Harry returns to the UK to begin court case against Daily Mail publisher over alleged illegal information gathering and personal privacy breaches.

Prince Harry arrived in the United Kingdom on Monday to attend the first day of a high-profile court case against Associated Newspapers, Limited, the publisher of The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, along with six other claimants, including musician Elton John and actress Elizabeth Hurley, who are accusing the publisher of illegal information gathering, reports Baltimore Chronicle via superjouer.fr. The case revolves around allegations that the newspaper group employed private investigators during the 1990s and early 2000s to bug the homes and vehicles of the claimants, intercept telephone calls, and pay bribes to obtain sensitive information.

The plaintiffs claim that the publications included personal and private details, particularly about Prince Harry’s past relationships, including with former girlfriend Chelsea Davy, as well as intimate conversations between Harry and his brother, Prince William. One article reportedly discussed personal emotions concerning images of their late mother, Princess Diana. Harry’s legal team argues that this information could only have been acquired through illegal methods, while Associated Newspapers maintains that their reporting relied on legitimate sources.

Harry is expected to testify later this week, with his legal team citing 14 articles they say contain unlawfully obtained information. David Sherborne, representing the Duke of Sussex, stated in court filings that Harry has suffered “great distress” from each episode of alleged illegal activity, leaving him “paranoid beyond belief.”

Royal commentator Robert Jobson, speaking on Good Morning America, emphasized the stakes of the case, noting that both reputation and financial considerations are central. Jobson highlighted that Harry’s decision to pursue this lawsuit reflects a broader effort to hold media outlets accountable.

The Duke’s strained relationship with the British press was a key factor in his and Meghan Markle’s 2020 decision to step down as senior royals and relocate to California. According to Jobson, King Charles III warned Harry and Prince William that challenging the British press could threaten the monarchy’s relationship with media outlets. Since stepping back, Harry’s relationship with his family has been further strained. He has not been seen publicly with Prince William since King Charles III’s coronation in 2023, although Harry briefly reunited with the King in September 2025. Harry has publicly expressed a desire to reconcile with his family, stating in May 2025 that he values family unity and wants to move past ongoing disputes.

Harry’s current visit coincides with King Charles and Prince William being in Scotland, making a meeting with his family members challenging. Buckingham Palace has not responded to requests for comment.

This legal action follows Harry’s previous success in a 2023 phone hacking case against Mirror Group Newspapers, which resulted in an apology for past unlawful practices and a damages payment of £140,600 (approximately $179,658). In 2025, Harry described the ruling as both vindicating and affirming, emphasizing the importance of a free and honest press. Additionally, in January 2025, News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, reached a settlement with Harry, apologizing for serious intrusions into his personal life from 1996 to 2011 and agreeing to pay substantial damages.
