Eric Dane, renowned for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has passed away at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), reports Baltimore Chronicle via CNN. He spent his final days surrounded by his wife Rebecca Gayheart, their two daughters Billie and Georgia, and close friends. Dane publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in 2025 and had since actively advocated for awareness and research into the neurodegenerative disease.
Dane’s acting career began in the early 1990s with minor roles in television series such as The Wonder Years and Roseanne, progressing to a recurring role on Gideon’s Crossing. He later appeared as Jason Dean on Charmed in 2003 before gaining worldwide recognition as Dr. Mark Sloan on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, beginning in 2006. The character, nicknamed “McSteamy,” became iconic, and Dane remained with the series through its ninth season, returning briefly in 2021 for the 17th season.
During his career, Dane also appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, and Burlesque. In 2019, he joined HBO’s Euphoria as Cal Jacobs, father of Jacob Elordi’s character Nate, and reprised the role in the second season, with plans to appear in the final third season. Euphoria creator Sam Levinson called Dane’s passing “heartbreaking,” adding that working with him was “an honor” and being his friend “a gift.”
Dane’s advocacy for ALS extended beyond public statements. Following his diagnosis, he engaged with the nonprofit I AM ALS, traveling to Washington, DC to support research initiatives and legislation such as the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act. He publicly shared his hope to witness life milestones of his daughters, stating he would “fight to the last breath.”
In his final public appearances, Dane continued to act, most recently portraying a firefighter with ALS in the series Brilliant Minds. Co-star Kim Raver described him as “a light” whose presence on set and with his family was “effortlessly shining.” His publicist emphasized that Dane “will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,” and acknowledged his gratitude toward fans for their support.
