Kostyuk makes it to the third round of the 2025 Australian Open with a rout

Marta confidently dealt with German Jule Niemeyer.

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk (No. 18 WTA) made it to the third round of the Australian Open-2025.

In the second round match of the main draw, the 22-year-old native of Kyiv defeated German Jule Niemeyer (No. 93 WTA). The match lasted 1 hour 6 minutes and ended with a score of 6:3, 6:0.

During her time on the court, Kostyuk served aces three times, made four double faults, and used five of six break points. This was the first face-to-face meeting between the tennis players.

Let's add that in the first round of the Australian major, Marta won a strong-willed victory over Japanese Nao Hibino – 3:6, 6:3, 6:1.

This is Kostyuk's sixth time in the main draw of the Australian Open. Her highest achievement at this Grand Slam tournament remains last year's quarterfinals.

Kostyuk's opponent in the 1/16 finals of the Australian Open 2025 will be the winner of the match between Paula Badosa (Spain) and Talia Gibson (Australia).

Recall that six Ukrainian tennis players played in the main draw of the Australian Open 2025. Yulia Starodubtseva, Daria Snigur and Angelina Kalinina failed to overcome the first round. In addition to Kostyuk, Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska also advanced to the second round, and will play their next matches on Thursday, January 16.

In the 1/32 finals, Yastremska (No. 33 WTA) will compete against Montenegrin Danka Kovinic (No. 1289 WTA), and Svitolina (No. 27 WTA) will face American Caroline Dolehide (No. 82 WTA).

The main draw matches of the 2025 Australian Open will be held from January 12 to 26. The current champion of the tournament is Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who is playing in neutral status due to the full-scale war of Russian occupiers against Ukraine.

Last year at the Australian Open, the best result among Ukrainian tennis players was shown by Yastremska, who reached the semi-finals, where she lost to Chinese Zheng Qinwen.
