The Carnival season officially began on January 6, known as Three Kings Day or Epiphany, marking the start of pre-Lenten observances. Historically, Mardi Gras celebrations stem from medieval Europe, passing from Rome to France, and eventually to North America via French Canadian settlers around 1699, particularly in what is now Mobile. Originally, the holiday included feasts such as “Boeuf Gras” or “fatted calf,” where participants enjoyed rich foods, sweets, and alcohol until the day before Ash Wednesday, after which a 40-day period of Lent commenced.
