The FBI on Thursday provided a detailed description of the individual suspected in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, identifying him as approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall with an average build and carrying a black, 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack, reports Baltimore Chronicle via foxnews. The federal agency has also increased the reward to $100,000 for information leading to Guthrie’s location or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved. Nancy Guthrie, 84, is the mother of NBC host Savannah Guthrie, and her disappearance on February 1 has prompted an extensive, multi-agency investigation.
Authorities from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona were seen searching brush off a road near Guthrie’s home as the investigation entered its 13th day. On Wednesday, the FBI conducted an extensive search along multiple roadways in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson. TMZ founder Harvey Levin reported that his organization received a letter from an individual claiming to know the identity of Guthrie’s alleged kidnapper, stating, “I am not being taken seriously.”
Late Friday evening, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop at a Culver’s parking lot approximately two miles from Guthrie’s residence, detaining at least three individuals for questioning, including the driver of a silver or gray Range Rover. Authorities examined the vehicle, photographed items from the trunk, and briefly shielded the area with a sheet to prevent observation. It remains unclear if any of the individuals detained are considered formal suspects.
Earlier in the day, a Pima County Sheriff’s surveillance plane was observed circling the neighborhood for about an hour before moving south. Later, a second, larger SWAT vehicle departed the active operation zone as a long line of additional law enforcement vehicles entered the area.
The sheriff’s office confirmed ongoing activity near E Orange Grove Rd and N First Ave but provided no additional details, stating the operation is part of a joint investigation with the FBI. Officials have not released further information regarding the identities of those detained or the specific objectives of the operation. The investigation remains active as it approaches its third week.
