Howard County school lunch visits are ending across the district as a new safety rule takes effect for the 2026–2027 school year. Parents may no longer join children for lunch at any HCPSS school, according to the Baltimore Chronicle. The change was first reported by WMAR-2 News and confirmed by an official HCPSS back-to-school notice.
Why HCPSS Ended Parent Lunch Visits
The Howard County Public School System says the restriction is intended to make schools safer and more predictable. Officials want fewer unnecessary visitors moving through buildings during the school day.
The district says the new policy should:
- reduce unnecessary access to students;
- limit disruptions during the school day;
- support regular student routines;
- reduce non-essential traffic inside schools.
The change was recommended by the district’s safety and security team. HCPSS spokesperson Brian Bassett told WMAR-2 it was not prompted by one specific incident.
Parents can still enter schools for approved activities. Visitors must follow the district’s screening and front-office check-in procedures. HCPSS also continues to encourage official volunteering.
Parents Say Lunch Visits Had Personal Value
Some Howard County parents have criticized the decision. Irene Chrismer told WMAR-2 that she regularly ate Friday lunch with her kindergartner last year.
She said previous visits already involved confidentiality and abuse-reporting training. Similar requirements had previously been used at HCPSS schools for parent lunch visitors.
Another parent, Danielle Pientka, said occasional lunch visits gave children a welcome change from their normal routine.
“It’s a shame to have that piece go away,” Pientka told WMAR-2.

The distinction matters. Parents have not been barred from HCPSS buildings entirely. Instead, routine cafeteria visits during lunch are specifically being eliminated.
Board of Education chair Jennifer Mallo said only a small number of parents had contacted the board seeking changes. She also said most families would likely understand the security concerns behind the decision.
For now, the policy applies across all Howard County public schools. Parents seeking more involvement are being directed toward formal volunteer opportunities and approved school visits.
