Labor Day 2026 will close banks, post offices, federal offices and financial markets across the United States on Monday, September 7. Most major retailers, restaurants, airports and travel services will continue operating, although local hours may change, as noted by Baltimore Chronicle.

The original report from Scripps News says most nonessential federal and state offices will shut for the holiday. The U.S. Department of Labor describes Labor Day as an annual celebration of American workers’ social and economic achievements.

What Is Closed On Labor Day 2026

Federal courts and most nonessential government offices will be closed. The Social Security Administration and Internal Revenue Service are among the affected agencies.

USPS has confirmed that all Post Office locations will close on September 7. Regular mail delivery and retail services resume Tuesday, September 8. Online USPS services remain available.

Several other major services will also stop normal operations:

  • U.S. post offices
  • most banks
  • federal courts and nonessential offices
  • New York Stock Exchange
  • Nasdaq
  • Costco warehouses

NYSE, Nasdaq and bond markets will remain closed Monday before reopening Tuesday. Costco location pages also list Labor Day as a closure.

Digital banking, ATMs and many online government services should remain accessible.

Home Depot lists Labor Day under regular operating hours for 2026. Target locations checked for September 7 also show normal opening hours.

Shoppers should still check their local store before leaving. Mall-based retailers and restaurants can follow different schedules.

Labor Day Travel Could Be Busy

Airports, hotels, gas stations and national parks generally remain open. That does not mean travelers should expect a normal Monday.

Labor Day weekend marks one of the final major travel periods of summer. Roads and airports can become considerably busier than usual. Recent reporting estimates millions of Americans will travel by car over the weekend.

Checking flight status, road conditions and local opening hours before departure can prevent avoidable delays.

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 after years of campaigning by labor organizations. Congress designated the first Monday in September as a legal holiday on June 28, 1894.
