The Netherlands returns to Eurovision 2027 after missing the contest for the first time in 24 years. The Dutch public broadcasting system has confirmed a national entry despite AVROTROS stepping away, as Baltimore Chronicle notes.
The decision was confirmed by NPO on September 23. The European Broadcasting Union also welcomed the Netherlands back to the competition. Official NPO announcement
Why the Netherlands is returning to Eurovision 2027
The situation is unusual because AVROTROS itself will not return. In August, the broadcaster announced that it would not organize the Dutch entry for 2027.
AVROTROS argued that geopolitical tensions had affected Eurovision too strongly. It also said recent EBU changes had not restored enough confidence in the contest’s neutrality.
The broadcaster then returned responsibility for Dutch participation to NPO. That opened the door for another structure.
After further talks with the EBU, NPO decided that the Netherlands would compete again. An independent team of experts will oversee the selection process.
The arrangement will work as follows:
- NPO will coordinate the Dutch participation.
- An independent team will supervise the selection.
- NOS will cover the semifinals and final.
- The Dutch artist and song have not yet been announced.
The decision therefore represents a Dutch return, but not an AVROTROS comeback. That distinction is central to the 2027 entry.
When is Eurovision 2027?
Eurovision 2027 will take place in Burgas, Bulgaria. The semifinals are scheduled for May 11 and May 13. The Grand Final will take place on May 15.
The Netherlands last competed in 2025. Claude represented the country with “C’est La Vie” and finished 12th in the Grand Final.
The country has won Eurovision 5 times. Its victories came in 1957, 1959, 1969, 1975 and 2019.

The most closely watched question now concerns the Dutch representative. NPO says the artist will be announced later.
Why did the Netherlands miss Eurovision 2026?
AVROTROS withdrew from Eurovision 2026 after Israel was allowed to participate. The broadcaster said participation under those circumstances conflicted with its public-service values.
In August 2026, AVROTROS also announced that it would not take responsibility for the 2027 entry. However, NPO continued negotiations with the EBU.
The EBU has since introduced changes to Eurovision rules. NPO says those talks helped bring the contest’s original unifying purpose back into focus.
For Dutch Eurovision fans, the result is clear: the Netherlands will be back on the Eurovision stage in 2027, although under a new organizational model.
