In 2007, a resident of the town of Estera, Alaska, noticed an unusual phenomenon: thousands of small worm-like creatures lined up in a long line and moving like a snake.
She took photographs of this spectacle and showed them to Derek Sykes, head of the insect department at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. Sykes became interested in this phenomenon and decided to conduct a study by collecting several larvae from this line and raising them in the laboratory.
To his surprise, these insects turned out to be ground mosquitoes belonging to the species Sciara mirabilis. However, these mosquitoes, unlike their European relatives, had an unusual behavior: they crawled in ranks.
Sykes published the results of his research in the scientific journal «Annals of the Entomological Society of America». He named the new species of ground mosquitoes Sciara serpens because of their unusual habits.
Recall that it was previously reported that scientists have found the place where life originated on Earth: experts said what happened.
