Apple has unexpectedly introduced its second-generation AirPods Max headphones, expanding its premium audio lineup with internal upgrades designed to improve sound quality and noise canceling while keeping the familiar design of the original model, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to CNN.
The updated headphones arrive after months of speculation about a successor to Apple’s over-ear noise-canceling model. The new AirPods Max 2 retain the same external appearance as the previous version but feature several internal hardware improvements aimed at enhancing listening performance. Preorders are scheduled to begin on March 25, with availability expected in early April.
One of the most significant changes is the integration of Apple’s H2 chip, which previously appeared in the company’s AirPods Pro 3 earbuds. Apple states that the chip, combined with updated computational audio algorithms, enables up to 1.5 times more effective active noise canceling compared with the previous AirPods Max generation.

According to Apple, the enhanced system is designed to better suppress persistent environmental sounds such as aircraft engines or the rumble of commuter trains. The improvement targets areas where competing headphones have previously performed strongly. In earlier comparisons, some rival models demonstrated stronger suppression of background noise like cabin airflow and constant ambient hum during flights.
The AirPods Max 2 also include a new high dynamic range amplifier that Apple says produces cleaner audio output. The company has additionally refined its Spatial Audio technology to improve the accuracy of bass reproduction and create more natural mid-range and high-frequency sound. Apple notes that the headphones can also provide studio-quality audio recording, which may benefit creators capturing music or spoken content.
Several software-driven features powered by the H2 chip are also being introduced. Loud Sound Reduction is designed to soften harsh environmental noise more effectively, while Personalized Volume adjusts playback levels automatically over time based on listening habits.
Other features mirror capabilities already available in Apple’s recent audio devices. Adaptive Audio dynamically blends active noise canceling and Transparency mode depending on the surrounding environment. Conversation Awareness automatically lowers audio playback when the user begins speaking. The headphones also support Apple’s Live Translation function, previously seen in AirPods Pro models, which helps facilitate conversations between speakers of different languages.
Additional capabilities include a Voice Isolation mode intended to improve call clarity by minimizing background noise during phone conversations. The Digital Crown control can also function as a camera remote shutter when paired with Apple devices, a feature previously associated with the Apple Watch.
Despite the internal upgrades, several aspects of the AirPods Max remain unchanged. Apple continues to ship the headphones with the same Smart Case accessory that leaves much of the device exposed, a design that has been criticized for offering limited protection compared with cases included with competing models.
The price also remains unchanged at $549. While technology prices have increased in many segments, Apple has kept the cost identical to the previous generation.
Some of the retained features remain key elements of the AirPods Max lineup. The headphones continue to support lossless audio playback and wired listening via USB-C. Automatic device switching across Apple products is also maintained, along with the company’s Transparency mode that allows users to hear surrounding sounds while wearing the headphones.
Apple’s technical specifications indicate that the AirPods Max 2 share the same size and weight as the USB-C version of the original AirPods Max. Battery performance is also unchanged, with up to 20 hours of listening time when active noise canceling is enabled.
The color lineup also remains the same, including bright blue, midnight, starlight, orange and purple options.
With preorders opening on March 25 and an expected release window in early April, the AirPods Max 2 enter the market as Apple’s latest premium over-ear headphones, focusing primarily on internal audio and processing improvements while retaining the established design and feature set of the original model.
