U.S. President Donald Trump has posthumously honored political blogger Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom — one of the nation’s highest civilian distinctions. The award ceremony took place on October 14, the day Kirk would have celebrated his 32nd birthday. The medal was accepted on his behalf by his widow, Erika Kirk, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing CNN.
During the event, Trump described Kirk as one of “America’s true heroes.” The president mentioned that he had considered postponing the ceremony, as he had returned from a Middle East trip just hours earlier, but added that he “would not have missed this moment for anything in the world.”
Trump also highlighted Kirk’s crucial role in mobilizing young voters and contributing to his success in the previous year’s presidential election. Jokingly, he remarked that without Kirk’s help, “Kamala Harris might have won.”
The former president further stated that after Kirk’s tragic death, the United States must show zero tolerance for radical left movements, violence, and extremism, warning that such threats endanger the nation’s stability.
Erika Kirk expressed her gratitude to Trump for recognizing her late husband’s dedication. She thanked him for making the tribute a priority and for honoring Charlie’s lifelong commitment to political activism. “Thank you, Mr. President, for commemorating my husband in such a meaningful way. Your support for our family and the cause he devoted his life to will forever be appreciated,” she said.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1945 to honor civilians for their service during World War II. It has since evolved into the highest civilian award in the United States, equal in prestige to the military Medal of Honor.
