Travis Turner, the head football coach at Union High School in Virginia, has been reported missing, casting uncertainty over the school’s undefeated football season, reports Baltimore Chronicle links to Fox News. Turner, 46, was last seen on Thursday wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and glasses, according to the Virginia State Police, who officially listed him as a missing person on Friday.
Wise County Public Schools confirmed that a staff member has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an external investigation into a reported allegation is underway. “A staff member has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an external agency reviews an allegation that was reported to the division. This is standard procedure and is not a determination of wrongdoing. This situation also involves an active law-enforcement matter, and the division cannot comment further,” stated Superintendent Dr. Mike Goforth.
State police reported that troopers visited Turner’s residence near Appalachia, Virginia, on Thursday evening in response to a non-criminal complaint, but he was not at home. Turner’s wife, Leslie Turner, posted on Facebook that he was “missing and that’s all we know,” although the post was later deleted.
Search operations involving K-9 units, drones, and ground crews are ongoing throughout Wise County. The community and Union High School Bears, who entered the postseason with an 11-0 record, have been deeply affected by his disappearance. Turner has served as the school’s head football coach since 2011.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the circumstances of Turner’s disappearance or whether foul play is suspected. Individuals with information are asked to contact the Virginia State Police at (276) 228-3131.
