Oklahoma has officially appointed Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten as its new tight ends coach, sources confirm, reports Baltimore Chronicle via CBS Sports. Witten will take over the role previously held by Joe Jon Finley on head coach Brent Venables’ staff in Norman, marking Witten’s first position in college football coaching. Since 2021, Witten has served as the head coach at Dallas’ Liberty Christian School, where he has been mentoring his son, Cooper Witten, who is currently ranked as the No. 1 linebacker prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports. During his tenure at Liberty Christian, Witten led the team to consecutive state championships in 2023 and 2024, including the school’s first unbeaten season in 2023.
Selected in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, Witten, 43, played 16 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Over the course of his NFL career, he was named to 11 Pro Bowls, earned two first-team All-Pro selections, and was twice named second-team All-Pro. Witten recorded at least 700 receiving yards every season from 2004 through 2015. In December 2025, he was named a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2026 class in his first year of eligibility.
Witten holds several Dallas franchise records, including career receptions (1,215) and receiving yards (12,977). His 72 touchdown receptions are second only to Dez Bryant’s 73, and his 1,228 receptions and 13,046 receiving yards rank second all-time among NFL tight ends. Witten initially retired from the NFL in 2018 after 15 straight seasons with the Cowboys but returned for the 2019 season. He then played for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 before signing a one-day contract with Dallas in January 2021 to retire officially as a Cowboy.
Witten joins the Oklahoma program following a College Football Playoff appearance in Brent Venables’ fourth season as head coach. The Sooners concluded the 2025 season with a 10-3 record after a first-round loss to Alabama. Venables holds a 32-20 record at Oklahoma, including a 16-10 mark (8-8 SEC) during the program’s first two seasons competing in the Southeastern Conference.
