The New York Giants will be permitted to open their offseason workout program earlier than most NFL teams in 2026 following the hiring of head coach John Harbaugh, reports Baltimore Chronicle viа Giants Wire. The scheduling advantage stems from league rules tied to coaching changes made after the 2025 season concluded.
Harbaugh agreed in January to a five-year deal to become the Giants’ new head coach. The veteran coach previously led the Baltimore Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XLVII during the 2012 season and was named the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year in 2019. His appointment not only marks a leadership transition for the franchise but also activates a provision in the NFL calendar allowing teams with newly hired head coaches to begin structured offseason programs ahead of clubs retaining their previous coaching staff.
According to the NFL’s official outline of key dates for 2026, organizations that made head coaching changes after the end of the 2025 campaign may commence offseason workout activities on April 6. Franchises that did not change head coaches are scheduled to start on April 20, creating a two-week differential in access to organized team activities.
For the Giants, the expanded preparation window arrives at a significant moment in roster development. The team is preparing for the second professional seasons of its two 2025 first-round draft selections: linebacker Abdul Carter, chosen third overall, and quarterback Jaxson Dart, selected with the 25th pick. The additional weeks of structured workouts provide more time for player integration, conditioning, and scheme implementation ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The early start offers the Giants a longer runway for installing systems under Harbaugh and coordinating on-field work before the next season officially begins.
