Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has received a four-year suspension for refusing an out-of-competition anti-doping test. The Czech player cited fear, anxiety and severe mental stress during the incident, as reported by the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced the sanction on June 22, 2026. An independent tribunal ruled that Vondrousova lacked a compelling justification for refusing the test.
Why Marketa Vondrousova Refused the Doping Test
A doping control officer visited Vondrousova’s home at around 8 p.m. on December 3, 2025. She did not provide the requested sample.
Vondrousova said the visitor arrived late and failed to identify themselves properly. She described her reaction as an acute response after months of physical and mental pressure.
The player later said she had never used prohibited substances. She also reported returning a negative result three days after the disputed visit.
The tribunal examined several central facts:
- The test was conducted outside competition.
- Vondrousova refused to provide a sample.
- She cited anxiety, fear and personal safety concerns.
- The tribunal found no compelling justification.
- The suspension expires on June 21, 2030.
The ruling concerns refusal to complete a test, not a positive sample. Under anti-doping regulations, refusing testing can still produce a four-year sanction.

What the Four-Year Tennis Ban Means
The suspension prevents Vondrousova from competing in authorised professional events. It covers tournaments governed by the ITF, WTA and national tennis associations.
