Gianni Infantino resignation calls grow after Trump’s Balogun intervention, as Klopp, Lineker and football officials question FIFA’s integrity.

Gianni Infantino resignation demands intensified after FIFA allowed Folarin Balogun to face Belgium despite his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Jürgen Klopp led the football backlash, questioning whether political influence had compromised the World Cup’s integrity, as reported by the Baltimore Chronicle.

Balogun’s automatic suspension was placed on probation under Article 27 of FIFA’s disciplinary code. The decision followed Donald Trump’s admission that he contacted Infantino and requested a review. FIFA maintained that its disciplinary committee acted independently.

Jürgen Klopp attacks FIFA over Balogun decision

“This is our sport, not theirs,” Klopp said. He described any private agreement between Trump and Infantino as “crazy” and warned that it placed every disciplinary decision under suspicion.

The dispute concerned these events:

  • Balogun received a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • FIFA suspended his one-match ban for a one-year probationary period.
  • Trump confirmed that he contacted Infantino.
  • Balogun played as the United States lost 4–1 to Belgium.

Belgium advanced despite the controversy. The result did not end questions about whether FIFA had applied its rules equally.

Gary Lineker questions the United States response

Gary Lineker argued that Mauricio Pochettino or Balogun could have rejected the ruling themselves. He suggested leaving the striker out would have defended fair play and sporting integrity.

Former Football Association chairman David Bernstein said the episode struck at football’s central attraction: rules applying worldwide. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey was more direct, declaring that “Infantino must go.”

FIFA faces an integrity crisis after Trump call

FIFA argues that its judicial bodies remain independent. Critics see an unprecedented exception granted after intervention from the president of a host country.

The case has therefore moved beyond Balogun’s eligibility. It now concerns who controls football’s rules and whether politically connected teams receive access unavailable to others.
