Why can the roof rail cover become dangerous?

The decorative cover may gradually lose its attachment strength. It can then separate from the SUV while the vehicle is moving.

A detached cover could strike another vehicle or force a driver to take evasive action. That creates a potential crash risk, particularly at highway speeds.

Possible warning signs include:

  • stronger wind noise near the roof;
  • squeaking or rattling while driving;
  • a visible gap near the roof rail;
  • trim that appears loose or misaligned.

Drivers who notice these symptoms should avoid attempting a temporary adhesive repair. A Ford dealership must inspect the mounting points and determine which components require replacement.

What should Ford Explorer owners do?

Owners should arrange an inspection with an authorized Ford dealer. Technicians will repair or replace damaged clips, fasteners or roof rail covers at no charge.

Ford expects to mail initial notification letters on August 24, 2026. A second letter describing the final repair procedure is expected in September 2026.

Owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332 and mention recall 26S54. They can also use the official NHTSA recall search to check whether their specific VIN has an open campaign.
