Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that if a personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin takes place, he is prepared to discuss a complete ceasefire and a prisoner exchange on the “all for all” basis. In an interview with the French publication, Zelensky emphasized that such a meeting would only make sense if it results in a clear political outcome, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing Liberation.

According to Zelensky, there is a profound lack of trust between the two sides, which is why he believes that any potential agreement must be mediated by international partners. He underscored the need for reliable and balanced third-party mediation, respected by both countries. Among potential guarantors, he mentioned the United States and noted that the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump could incentivize Putin to attend the talks. If Putin refuses to show up, it would appear as a complete defeat for him, Zelensky added.

The Ukrainian leader also called for tougher sanctions against Russia, especially from the United States and the European Union.

When asked about the possible duration of the war, Zelensky responded that no one can predict the end of the conflict, but he is certain it cannot last for another decade — Ukraine and its partners cannot bear such costs for so long.

Zelensky announced a scheduled meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara on Thursday. However, if Putin agrees to travel to Istanbul, both leaders will fly there to meet him. U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg are also expected in Istanbul and may join the anticipated talks between Ukraine and Russia.

Andriy Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office, stated that Putin’s refusal to attend would signal Russia’s unwillingness to end the war. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has confirmed its delegation is preparing for negotiations in Istanbul on May 15 but declined to provide further comment.
