U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment over recent Russian missile strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and major cities in Ukraine. This was stated by U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker on the eve of the summit in The Hague, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to European Pravda.
According to the diplomat, Trump is particularly troubled by these attacks amid ongoing diplomatic efforts. “President Trump is disheartened by such strikes in the midst of negotiations. We call on both sides to exercise restraint,” Whitaker noted.
At the same time, the U.S. representative did not specify what exact expectations Donald Trump has from the parties involved in the conflict. This ambiguity leaves room for interpretation, given the vague formulation.
When directly asked whether Trump believes Russia is truly seeking peace in light of the Russian army’s recent actions, Whitaker emphasized his condemnation of the missile attacks.
“I want to join the many voices around the world in condemning the strikes on civilians in Ukraine and extend my deepest condolences to the families of those killed, including an American citizen who lost their life during one of the latest attacks,” said the U.S. Ambassador to NATO.
