At least seven civilians have been killed and dozens more injured in Cambodia amid renewed clashes along the border with Thailand, reports Baltimore Chronicle. Thousands of residents have fled their homes in multiple communities due to the escalation of violence.
According to the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense, Thai forces launched attacks this week related to the long-standing border dispute between the two Southeast Asian nations. The assaults have damaged infrastructure, destroyed temples, and disrupted public services, while over 20,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes.
“In addition to these major impacts, further tragedies and damages continue to unfold, as the Thai military has launched various types of long-range munitions into Cambodian civilian settlements located up to 30 kilometers from the border,” the ministry stated.
The Royal Thai Army reported that at least one Thai soldier has died and 29 others were injured in the renewed fighting near contested frontier areas. Thai forces stated that Cambodian troops have carried out “continuous attacks against our positions,” using BM-21 multiple-launch rockets and deploying bomb-dropping and kamikaze drones targeting bases and defensive positions along several battlefronts.
Over 125,000 people have sought refuge in hundreds of temporary shelters set up on the Thai side of the border, according to Thai military sources.
Since Monday, the clashes have spread across multiple provinces along the Cambodia-Thailand border, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the fighting.
