Austria secured victory at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, which took place on May 17 in Basel, Switzerland. The country was represented by 24-year-old countertenor Johannes Pitsch, known by his stage name JJ, who performed the song “Wasted Love.” He earned a total of 436 points: 258 from the professional jury and 178 from the public vote, reports the Baltimore Chronicle.

“Wasted Love” is JJ’s debut single, created in collaboration with Theodora Spyrich (Thea) and Thomas Turner. The track blends pop and operatic elements, telling the story of unrequited love through metaphors of a sinking boat and the ocean’s depths.

The stage performance, executed in black-and-white tones, was crafted by Spanish professionals Sergio Jaén and Borja Rueda, who previously worked on the Junior Eurovision 2024 production.

Israel claimed second place with the song “New Day Will Rise” performed by Yuval Rafael, scoring 357 points. Estonia followed closely in third with “Espresso Macchiato” by Tommy Cash, which earned 356 points.

Spain, represented by singer Melody with her song “Esa Diva,” finished 24th with 37 points—27 from the jury and 10 from the televote. During the broadcast, Spanish broadcaster RTVE expressed support for Palestine, prompting a warning from the European Broadcasting Union due to Eurovision’s strict ban on political statements during the competition.
