Trump Station could become the new name of Manhattan’s Penn Station during its planned $8 billion transformation. The administration has asked senior senators to consider renaming America’s busiest rail hub, the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team notes.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy included the proposal in a congressional funding request. However, his letter did not formally recommend Donald Trump’s name.
Why Penn Station Could Be Renamed
Duffy previously said that “Trump Station” had a pleasant ring. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also publicly welcomed the possibility.
Trump maintains that other politicians and construction union leaders first proposed the idea. He also questioned why a major New York landmark carries Pennsylvania’s name.
The station is actually named after the Pennsylvania Railroad, which built the original terminal. The company ceased operating decades ago.
The administration’s proposal now faces several political and procedural obstacles:
- Congress must approve major federal funding decisions.
- Amtrak owns the station and oversees the redesign.
- New York authorities operate much of the local rail network.
- Democratic lawmakers strongly oppose the proposed renaming.
A new name has not been selected. Duffy’s request only calls for Penn Station to receive another name during redevelopment.
What the $8 Billion Penn Station Redesign Includes
The current plan seeks to restore elements of the original 1910 Beaux-Arts terminal. That building was demolished in 1963 for Madison Square Garden.

Penn Station would continue operating during phased construction. Recently released renderings still show “Pennsylvania Station” on the main facade. One interior rendering displays Trump’s presidential seal and name.
Critics Call the Proposal a Vanity Project
Representative Jerry Nadler described the federal intervention as a hostile takeover. He argued that New York riders should not finance a presidential vanity project.
The Riders Alliance raised similar concerns. Its representatives said the debate should focus on service, travel times and construction costs.
More than 600,000 passengers use the hub on a typical weekday. That scale makes funding, station access and operational reliability more urgent than branding.
No final decision has been announced. Any transition from Penn Station to Trump Station would require political support and a formal naming process.
