Robert Carradine, star of ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ and ‘Lizzie McGuire,’ dies at 71 after a long battle with bipolar disorder, leaving fans and family mourning.

Robert Carradine, the acclaimed actor celebrated for his performances in “The Long Riders,” “Revenge of the Nerds,” and the Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire,” has passed away at the age of 71, his management company confirmed, Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the CNN. Carradine’s family shared that he had been bravely facing nearly two decades of challenges with bipolar disorder, emphasizing his role as a guiding light for those around him.

Carradine was born on March 24, 1954, the youngest son of the late legendary actor John Carradine. He grew up in a family deeply rooted in Hollywood, with brothers David Carradine and Keith Carradine achieving notable acting careers, and Christopher Carradine serving as a former vice president at Walt Disney Imagineering. In a statement, his family described him as a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother whose warmth and light impacted everyone he met.

Keith Carradine spoke openly about Robert’s struggle with mental illness, highlighting the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding bipolar disorder. He said, “We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle and his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day.”

Carradine’s Hollywood career spanned decades, beginning with his film debut in 1972 alongside John Wayne and Roscoe Lee Browne in “The Cowboys.” He achieved widespread fame as Lewis Skolnick in the 1984 comedy “Revenge of the Nerds,” portraying the earnest and idealistic leader of a fraternity of social misfits. The role solidified his place in pop culture and led to multiple sequels over the years.

In the early 2000s, Carradine reached a new audience as Sam McGuire, the father of the title character in Disney Channel’s hit series “Lizzie McGuire.” Co-stars paid heartfelt tributes following news of his death. Hilary Duff wrote on Instagram, “This one hurts. It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him.” Jake Thomas described him as “one of the coolest guys you could ever meet. Funny, pragmatic, sometimes cranky, always a little eccentric.”

Carradine’s daughter, Ever Carradine, shared a personal tribute reflecting his loving nature: “My sweet, funny dad, who never missed an opportunity to drive me to the airport or tell me how much he loved my homemade salad dressing, is gone. Whenever anyone asks me how I turned out so normal, I always tell them it’s because of my dad. I knew my dad loved me, I knew it deep in my bones, and I always knew he had my back. Rest easy, dad. I love you the most.”
