U.S. surfer Kurt Van Dyke has been found murdered in Cahuita, Limon, Costa Rica, after police responded to reports of an armed break-in at an apartment around 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, reports Baltimore Chronicle. The incident occurred in a coastal province approximately 100 miles east of San Jose, with further details confirmed by law enforcement sources.
Authorities discovered Van Dyke’s body under a bed, covered with a sheet. Police confirmed that he had been strangled and stabbed multiple times. A woman present during the attack survived and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police told authorities.
Investigators reported that two suspects broke into the apartment and stole Van Dyke’s Hyundai Elantra before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made so far. Law enforcement officials are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators and understand the sequence of events.
Van Dyke, 66, was a longtime resident of Costa Rica and originally from Santa Cruz, California. He was recognized as a pioneer of surfing in Northern California and was highly regarded among the local surf community, according to Surfer.com. Additional details about the circumstances of his death have not been released.
