Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska withdrew from her first-round match at the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, where she was facing German competitor Laura Siegemund. The news was reported by Baltimore Chronicle.
Yastremska was one of two Ukrainian players who began their campaigns in Beijing from the second round. Fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk will also start competing at this stage of the tournament.
In the second round of the WTA 1000 event, Yastremska’s opponent was Laura Siegemund, ranked 53rd in the WTA standings. This match marked their fourth career meeting, with the Ukrainian previously winning all three encounters. Their last clash took place at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome in 2024, where Yastremska claimed victory in three sets (2:1).
During the current match, the players exchanged set wins. Siegemund took two consecutive games at 5:5 to secure the first set, while Yastremska leveled the score by winning the second set 6:3.
At the beginning of the decisive third set, with the score at 1:2, Yastremska requested a medical timeout due to neck discomfort. After returning to the court, she lost two more games and subsequently decided to retire from the match, citing injury.
