Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in London on Tuesday for high-level discussions with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at 10 Downing Street, focusing on ongoing efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict and sustain sanctions on Moscow, reports Baltimore Chronicle. The talks occur as Europe and world leaders grapple with simultaneous developments in the Middle East, where the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran have escalated tensions and disrupted global oil supplies.
Prime Minister Starmer’s office confirmed that the meeting will address peacemaking strategies in Ukraine and the necessity of continued international pressure on Russia. The discussions follow Washington’s temporary easing of certain Russian oil sanctions, a move Zelenskyy criticized as potentially benefiting Moscow and allowing continued attacks on Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his aim to broker a peace deal in Europe’s largest conflict since World War II, a situation that has alarmed European leaders who view Russia as a long-term security threat to the European Union.
Attempts at U.S.-mediated negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv have produced little progress on critical issues, a process further slowed by the conflict in the Middle East. Ed Arnold, Senior Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, commented that Ukraine is the “ultimate loser” from the Iran war, noting that U.S. air defense missile stocks, vital for Kyiv, are being depleted, and Washington’s focus is diverted away from resolving the Russia-Ukraine war.
Zelenskyy has recently engaged with Gulf countries to discuss mutual strategic interests. François Heisbourg, special adviser at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris, emphasized the importance of Ukraine securing deals with Gulf states for advanced air defense systems, offering its anti-drone expertise in exchange. Despite Zelenskyy’s proposals, Trump has declined Ukrainian assistance for the U.S. and its Persian Gulf partners. Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in high-tech drone interception technology, tested in battle.
British authorities reported that Russia and Iran are coordinating on drone technology and combat tactics in the Middle East, prompting deployment of U.K. and Ukrainian drone experts to assist regional allies. Starmer’s office announced an agreement combining Ukraine’s technological expertise with the U.K.’s industrial capabilities to manufacture drones and advanced defense systems, alongside a joint “AI Center of Excellence” funded by Britain in collaboration with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.
Zelenskyy highlighted his focus on expanding security and economic opportunities for Ukraine in his X (formerly Twitter) announcement. Starmer reinforced that drones, electronic warfare, and rapid battlefield innovation are central to national and economic security, noting that recent Middle East conflicts further underscore these priorities. Strengthening defense partnerships, he said, enhances Ukraine’s resilience against Russian attacks while preparing the U.K. and allies for future threats.
On the operational front, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported overnight destruction of 206 Ukrainian drones across Russian territories, Crimea, and the Azov Sea, including 40 drones targeting Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed recent Ukrainian drone operations over Moscow as “absolutely futile resistance.” Zelenskyy, however, stated that Ukrainian counterattacks along eastern and southern frontlines have disrupted Moscow’s plans for a March offensive, a claim partially supported by the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, which noted that Ukrainian operations are likely constraining some Russian maneuvers.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 178 long-range drones nationwide overnight, with 154 intercepted or jammed, and 22 successfully striking their targets. In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian strike damaged a terminal of Nova Poshta, Ukraine’s largest private delivery company, wounding eight people, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration, via Telegram.
