The child’s body discovered on Tuesday near Klein Upahl in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been officially identified as the missing eight-year-old Fabian from Güstrow, reports Baltimore Chronicle. Authorities have returned to the site on Friday to continue their investigation. Police are focusing on collecting evidence from the location and are carefully examining the surrounding area, as they seek to reconstruct the circumstances leading to the boy’s death.
Investigators interviewed a local woman who had been walking in the area, asking whether she had seen a pickup truck with a trailer. According to her statement, witnesses had reported seeing a vehicle near the scene around the time Fabian disappeared. Prosecutors declined to confirm whether the vehicle in question was indeed a pickup with a trailer.
Fabian’s football team held a moment of silence in his memory. Players from the ETSV Güstrow Over-35 team paused during an away game, with the club president Jan Boralewski noting that the players gathered at midfield holding a jersey of the boy. Fabian had been scheduled to play his first match for the team that he had recently joined in training sessions. “The mood was somber,” Boralewski said.
Authorities have resumed searches around a pond near the discovery site, pumping down the water to a lower level and scanning the area with equipment resembling a metal detector. Police also used chainsaws in nearby bushes during the operation. Prosecutor Harald Nowack stressed the importance of avoiding public speculation, noting that rumors could endanger potential suspects.
It has now been confirmed that Fabian’s body was found by his father’s ex-girlfriend, who was walking in the forest with a friend and her dogs. She told reporters that the boy “was like my own child” and described the scene as deeply disturbing. She is not considered a suspect by the Rostock prosecutors.
Officials have emphasized that all findings are being carefully verified and that the investigation aims to recover objects related to the case. DNA analysis confirmed Fabian’s identity, and preliminary autopsy results indicate he was a victim of a violent crime.
Police previously conducted extensive searches for Fabian, but his parents were unable to view the body for identification. Authorities are now concentrating on securing and analyzing evidence from the surrounding area to support the investigation.
