On Sunday, December 14, a group of armed individuals opened fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney during the Jewish Hanukkah celebration, resulting in at least 10 people killed and several others injured, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to 7 News.

The shooting occurred in the northern section of Bondi Beach, near a children’s playground where a Hanukkah by the Sea event was scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported hearing at least 50 gunshots. Video footage circulating online shows two men firing long-barreled firearms.

“I saw at least ten people on the ground and blood everywhere,” one eyewitness told reporters. According to News.com.au, ten people were killed, though authorities have not yet officially confirmed the number.

New South Wales Police confirmed that two individuals are currently in custody. “Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing, and we continue to urge people to avoid the area,” the statement said.

Videos circulating online also show a man reportedly disarming one of the shooters by approaching from behind.

December 14 marks the first day of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, an eight-day Jewish holiday.
