US sanctions against Russia expanded after Washington targeted military bodies, 2 companies, and 5 Russian nationals. The measures concern activities linked to weapons proliferation, as the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team reports.
The US State Department published the official sanctions notice on August 4, 2026. However, the restrictions took effect on July 24.
The decision was issued under the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Act. The law covers transfers that may support weapons of mass destruction or missile programs.
Which Russian Entities Were Added to the US Sanctions List
The new US sanctions target several bodies connected to Russia’s Defense Ministry and armed forces.

The notice also covers successors, subsidiaries, and subordinate units of the listed organizations. This wording prevents sanctioned bodies from avoiding restrictions through restructuring.
The targeted Russian nationals are:
- Aleksandr Prikhodko;
- Andrei Gusev;
- Andrey Kosolapov;
- Vladislav Morozik;
- Sergey Tsibarev.
The wider list includes individuals and businesses from China, Iran, Malaysia, North Korea, Syria, and Taiwan. Washington therefore framed the action as a broader nonproliferation measure, rather than a Russia-only package.
What the New US Sanctions Against Russia Prohibit
The restrictions introduce several direct barriers for every listed person and organization.
US government agencies cannot purchase their goods, services, or technology. They also cannot provide federal assistance or admit them into government support programs.
Sales of defense articles and services are prohibited. Existing export licenses are suspended, while new controlled-export licenses cannot be issued.
The measures will remain effective for 2 years unless the Secretary of State changes the decision. They apply alongside sanctions imposed under other US legal authorities.
