Lake Shore junior fire camp has introduced 25 young participants to firefighting, emergency medicine and 911 operations. The week-long program is the first of its kind organized by the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore Chronicle reports.

The camp combines practical safety lessons with an effort to recruit future volunteers. Participants study fire behavior, prevention, CPR, first aid, department leadership and emergency command procedures.

Young participants learn emergency response skills

Training covers several parts of fire and rescue work. Campers explore duties performed by firefighters, paramedics and 911 dispatch personnel.

The program includes:

  • CPR and basic first aid
  • Fire prevention and fire behavior
  • Department organization and leadership
  • Teamwork during emergency scenarios
  • Introduction to 911 command operations

The lessons provide skills that can also help participants respond to emergencies outside the fire service.

Camp supports junior firefighter recruitment

Assistant Chief Joseph Larson said the camp gives young people direct exposure to fire service careers. It also helps the department identify participants interested in joining its junior firefighter program.

Some campers arrived because their parents encouraged them. Others quickly decided they wanted to become junior members, Larson said.

Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company offers several membership paths, including firefighter and EMT roles, auxiliary service and a junior program. Its youth initiative is designed to build a future pool of trained community volunteers.

The camp ends Saturday with an 11 a.m. graduation ceremony for participants and their families. The event will take place at the new Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Station.
