The authorities of the Spanish city of Terrassa have temporarily suspended the adoption of black cats from the local animal shelter to protect them from potential cruelty and “any harmful practices” during Halloween, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to BBC. The restriction will be in effect from October 6 to November 10, a period when requests to adopt black cats traditionally increase.
City officials note that demand for black cats rises sharply before Halloween. Although no cases of mistreatment have been recorded in Terrassa itself, similar incidents have occurred in other areas, prompting the temporary ban.
The decision followed recommendations from local animal protection groups to safeguard cats from harm or being used as props during the holiday. The shelter retains the ability to consider individual exceptional adoption requests. City representatives emphasized that the measure is “temporary and exceptional,” but they did not rule out implementing it again in the future.
According to the Catalan news agency, over 9,800 cats live in Terrassa, with around 100 residing in the local adoption center, including 12 black cats.
