A total of nine people have died, including seven at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and more than two dozen others were injured after an active shooter opened fire in the small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to ABC. The suspected shooter is also deceased, reportedly from a self-inflicted injury, according to a statement from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The gunfire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School was first reported around 1:20 p.m., the RCMP said. Responding officers discovered six victims deceased inside the school, while another individual succumbed to injuries en route to a hospital. Two additional victims were airlifted with serious or life-threatening injuries. Approximately 25 others were assessed for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities added.
During the investigation, police identified a secondary location believed to be linked to the incident. Two more victims were found dead inside a nearby residence. The RCMP stated that officers continue to search additional homes and properties to determine whether others may be injured or connected to the events.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his devastation over the attack, saying he “joins Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today,” and praised the bravery and dedication of first responders who confronted the shooter to protect citizens.
Tumbler Ridge is a remote town of roughly 2,400 residents located in the Northern Rockies region of northeastern British Columbia. The small community has been profoundly affected by the tragedy, with local authorities continuing to provide support to victims and families.
