Рresident Donald Trump, during the first 100 days of his second term, is demonstrating a tougher stance toward Russia in an effort to fulfill his promise of ending the war in Ukraine, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing Reuters.
Former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, noted that Trump, frustrated by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s lack of concessions, has chosen the “hard road” of increased pressure on the Kremlin.
Volker emphasized that the recently signed agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine—granting American entities priority access to Ukrainian mineral resources—serves as an opportunity for Trump to show his supporters that Ukraine is a strategic partner, not a dependent state.
While the agreement does not provide Ukraine with formal security guarantees, it lays the groundwork for deeper cooperation and future U.S. support.
At the same time, Volker called on the U.S. Congress to back the Trump administration by introducing secondary sanctions against key Russian actors in order to intensify the economic pressure on Moscow. Despite Trump’s current reluctance to discuss military aid for Ukraine, growing economic cooperation between the two nations reinforces America’s strategic interest in Ukrainian stability and development.
