Spain has become the seventeenth European Union member state to support a declaration calling on the European Commission to take decisive action against Hungary over its discriminatory measures targeting the LGBTIQ+ community, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to European Truth.

The statement, initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expresses concern over recent legislative and constitutional changes in Hungary that, according to the signatories, infringe on the fundamental rights of LGBTIQ+ citizens. These changes were adopted by the Hungarian Parliament on March 18 and April 14, 2025.

The signatories are urging the Hungarian government to repeal the controversial measures and ensure the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all citizens, in line with the country’s international obligations. The document also stresses that the European Commission must “immediately and fully” apply all legal instruments available to compel Budapest to lift the ban on Pride events.

Countries that had already signed the declaration include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Sweden. France and Germany joined later.

On March 18, the Hungarian Parliament approved legislation banning public events that, in its wording, “promote homosexuality or gender change.” Another amendment passed on April 14 further entrenched these restrictions. These moves are consistent with the anti-LGBT policies promoted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his ruling Fidesz party, which has been systematically limiting the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community.
