Portugal entered the knockout stage under pressure and fell behind after Ivan Perišić scored in the 53rd minute. Ronaldo responded from the penalty spot in the 68th minute. Gonçalo Ramos completed the comeback with a header in stoppage time.
Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup Record Surpasses Pepe’s Mark
Ronaldo scored at 41 years and 147 days. He therefore became the oldest player to score during the World Cup knockout stage.
The previous record belonged to another Portuguese defender, Pepe. He was 39 years and 283 days old against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup.
Ronaldo also became the first outfield player aged over 41 to appear in a World Cup knockout match. The Croatia game was another landmark appearance during his sixth World Cup campaign.
