Federal agents continue operations in Raleigh after mass detentions in Charlotte; Mayor Janet Cowell says local police are not involved as DHS expands enforcement.

The mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina, announced that federal authorities will continue operating in the region on Tuesday following a large-scale weekend action in Charlotte, where federal agents detained more than 130 individuals in roughly 48 hours, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, referencing the abc. Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell issued a statement late Monday noting that the city had not requested the presence of Border Patrol teams.

Cowell emphasized that Raleigh aims to ensure safety for everyone who lives and works within the city, adding that officials had been informed of the upcoming arrival of Customs and Border Protection units. She reiterated that the Raleigh Police Department does not take part in immigration enforcement but will continue to uphold the law and safeguard local residents.

The mayor confirmed that local police have not been involved in any federal immigration planning efforts and stated that the department will maintain regular community operations without coordination with Border Patrol agents. She added that Raleigh remains a safe city with crime decreasing year over year, stressing that public safety remains a central focus for her administration.

According to federal officials, the Charlotte operation resulted in more than 130 arrests across the weekend, with 81 individuals detained in the first five hours of “Operation Charlotte’s Web” on Saturday. Charlotte is the latest location targeted under the Trump administration’s intensified approach to enforcing immigration laws nationwide, following similar actions in Los Angeles and Chicago — jurisdictions known for “sanctuary” policies. The Department of Homeland Security noted that North Carolina also has local politicians supporting such positions.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said that additional enforcement personnel were deployed to Charlotte to remove individuals deemed public safety risks, asserting that federal leadership under President Donald Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem would act even when local “sanctuary” officials would not.

Federal authorities expect agents to remain in Charlotte until Friday. By week’s end, approximately 200 officers are scheduled to redeploy to New Orleans for the launch of “Operation Catahoula Crunch,” according to multiple law enforcement sources.

Cowell encouraged Raleigh residents to stay calm and uphold community values, reminding them that anyone needing assistance should call 911 and receive help without hesitation. She concluded her message by reaffirming unity within the city.
