President Donald Trump and NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani held a surprisingly amicable meeting, agreeing to focus on tackling affordability and crime in New York City.

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met at the White House on Friday, November 21, 2025, for a closed-door discussion that centered on pressing issues facing the city, specifically its affordability crisis and public safety concerns. Despite months of exchanging sharp rhetoric and insults, the two leaders appeared remarkably cordial during their public comments following the approximately 25-minute meeting in the Oval Office. President Trump extended his congratulations to the incoming mayor, expressing optimism for his term. “I just want to congratulate. I think you’re going to have hopefully a really great mayor and the better he does, the happier I am,” Trump stated. He emphasized that partisan differences would not impede cooperation, adding, “There’s no difference in party. There’s no difference in anything. And we’re going to be helping him, to make everybody’s dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York and congratulations, Mr. mayor,” reports Baltimore Chronicle.

Mayor-elect Mamdani described the encounter as productive, highlighting a “shared admiration and love” for New York City as the common ground that guided their conversation. He stressed the importance of delivering affordability relief to the 8.5 million residents of the metropolis, ensuring they do not have to worry about basic necessities like rent. This surprisingly friendly press conference stood in stark contrast to the preceding months, during which Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist who rose from an obscure state assemblyman in Queens, was repeatedly labelled a “communist” by the President, even as late as the Thursday before the summit.

After their handshake, both leaders suggested they found common ground on numerous topics. Trump even predicted that Mamdani would be a great leader who would surprise “some conservative people.” The President stated, “I think this mayor could do some things that are going to be really great.” Mamdani, who has previously criticized Trump’s policies and referred to him as a despot and a fascist, acknowledged that while places of disagreement between them are numerous, the meeting focused on their shared goal of serving New Yorkers.

Their past public animosity was brought up by reporters during the news conference. When Mamdani was asked if he still considered the President a fascist, Trump interjected with a jovial remark, patting the mayor-elect on the back and joking, “That’s OK, you can just say, ‘Yes.’ It’s easier. It’s easier than explaining it.” The discussion also touched upon crime, a topic that previously led the President to threaten withholding federal funding and sending federal agents to the city if Mamdani was elected. The mayor-elect had also been a vocal critic of the administration’s expanded ICE raids and increased deportations.
