New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is set to meet President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, marking their first in-person encounter after months of public disagreements and campaign rhetoric, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
Despite Trump’s earlier insults and threats toward the progressive Democrat, Mamdani has expressed his intent to use the meeting to discuss key aspects of his agenda, including addressing the nationwide affordability crisis. The mayor-elect, a member of the Democratic Socialist group, emphasized that he views the meeting as an opportunity to present his policy priorities directly to the President.
Trump announced the upcoming meeting on social media, reiterating his “communist” label for Mamdani and highlighting his middle name, Kwame, in quotes. The President has also previously threatened to withhold federal funding from New York if Mamdani assumed office.
Ahead of the Oval Office discussion, Robert Wolf, a former UBS executive with ties to former President Barack Obama, shared on X that he had a Zoom conversation with Mamdani on Thursday, reviewing recent economic developments and preparing for the meeting with Trump.
Mamdani, 34, has been a vocal critic of federal policies, including deportations, government agency cuts, and measures affecting Democratic-led cities. On election night, he directly addressed Trump during his victory speech, pledging to protect immigrant communities and saying, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani’s proposals centered on affordability for New Yorkers. Initiatives include raising income taxes on residents earning over a million dollars annually, providing free childcare for children as young as six weeks, and offering free public bus service. Critics have questioned the feasibility of some measures, noting that certain proposals require state approval.
Mamdani has also responded to past controversies, including remarks about the NYPD and Israeli government policies, apologizing where necessary while maintaining his stance on broader issues. Despite past tensions, he has repeatedly stated that threats from the administration will not deter him and affirmed his willingness to engage constructively on policy matters.
The mayor-elect highlighted his intention to collaborate with Trump on affordability concerns, recognizing that lowering costs is a key issue for city residents. “I have many disagreements with the president. I intend to make it clear that I will work with him,” Mamdani said Thursday, emphasizing a pragmatic approach to advancing his progressive platform.
