Georgia’s 14th District faces a crowded special election after Greene resigns, testing Trump’s influence as Republican candidates compete for her seat.

Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s unexpected resignation from Congress earlier this year has created a sudden political upheaval in Georgia, particularly in the state’s 14th Congressional District, sparking a competitive special election to fill her seat, reports Baltimore Chronicle via ABC. Greene’s departure followed a public disagreement with former President Donald Trump over several issues, including the release of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, marking a sharp break with her former ally and setting the stage for a contested race in a district historically loyal to Republican candidates.

The special election scheduled for Tuesday features more than a dozen candidates, the majority of whom are Republicans, competing to succeed Greene, known as one of the most aggressive advocates of the MAGA movement. The district, which reelected Greene by nearly 29 points in 2024, is considered safely conservative, making a Democratic victory highly unlikely. Among the Republican candidates, local district attorney and Air National Guard officer Clay Fuller has received Trump’s endorsement. Fuller, a former White House fellow under the Trump administration, was introduced by Trump during a visit to northwest Georgia last month, with Trump praising him as “a total winner” during a speech in Rome, Georgia.

Despite Trump’s backing, the race remains crowded with other prominent Republicans, including Colton Moore, a former Georgia state senator known for his anti-establishment stance and prior arrest at the state Capitol during Governor Brian Kemp’s 2025 State of the State address. Conservative commentator Martha Zoller described the election as a “real test for the Trump endorsement,” highlighting the contrasting political styles of Fuller and Moore, which may influence voters’ decisions regarding the tone and approach they expect from their new representative.

Cole Muzio, president of the Georgia-based conservative organization Frontline Policy Council, noted that Greene’s combative style and loyalty to Trump maintained her popularity in the district, despite controversies. The special election does not include party primaries, meaning the top two vote-getters will advance to a likely runoff on April 7 if no candidate secures a majority. Republicans have expressed concern that the crowded GOP field, combined with consolidation around Democratic candidate Shawn Harris—a farmer and retired Army brigadier general who ran against Greene in 2024—could allow Harris to advance to the runoff. “The chances are pretty high that Shawn Harris will make the runoff. I think that’s why President Trump made the endorsement,” Muzio said.

Candidates’ positions on Trump’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran, have also emerged as a divisive issue. Fuller has publicly supported military operations in Iran, expressing gratitude for the elimination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Harris criticized the actions as a “war of choice” requiring congressional debate. Moore has not publicly stated his position. Zoller emphasized that voter turnout will likely play a decisive role: “Nothing is going to drive people to the polls right now for a special election, other than the get-out-the-vote operations for whoever the candidates are. Because people just aren’t thinking about it.”

The winner of the special election will only serve the remainder of Greene’s term, necessitating a separate race for a full two-year term beginning in January 2027, with primaries scheduled for May 19. This creates a prolonged election cycle for candidates seeking to secure the seat in the long term, keeping the spotlight on Georgia’s 14th District and the influence of Trump’s endorsement throughout multiple contests.
