Estonian passenger transport company Bolt has launched the first hydrogen-powered fleet with zero emissions in Tallinn, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Mobility Plaza.

Residents of the Estonian capital can now book rides in hydrogen-powered vehicles through the Bolt app. This is the first such initiative in the Baltic countries.

The fleet will include 30 Toyota Mirai cars, gradually deployed across the city. The project is part of the “green” hydrogen program, which covers production and refueling infrastructure at Utilitas’s Väo energy complex, the acquisition of vehicles through ELKE Auto, and the opening of a second hydrogen station this year at the Alexela facility on Peterburi Road.

According to Aivo Lokk, Head of Business Analysis at Utilitas, green hydrogen is currently the only viable alternative to fossil fuels not only in transport but also across various industrial sectors. He noted that the project is still at a pilot stage with limited scale, but its potential is significant.

For Bolt, adding hydrogen vehicles expands its low-emission transport options. The initiative aligns with the EU directive requiring Estonia to establish a nationwide alternative fuel network, including hydrogen stations accessible at transport hubs and every 200 kilometers along major highways by 2030.

Artur Dianov, Head of Alternative Fuel Development at Alexela, stated that the first station in Väo is already operational for business clients, and later this year, the first retail-accessible hydrogen station in Estonia will open.

The Toyota Mirai is a modern electric vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
