Springboks vs All Blacks in Baltimore will bring rugby’s biggest rivalry to M&T Bank Stadium on September 12. South Africa leads the series 2–1 before the fourth Test, reports Baltimore Chronicle.

The match has significance beyond the final score. Baltimore offers both unions access to a larger commercial market and new American rugby fans.

Baltimore Test could add around R90 million

The financial difference could be substantial.

Daily Maverick reported projected additional revenue of R80 million to R100 million. That is above what the game could generate in South Africa.

The midpoint puts the potential extra revenue near R90 million. World Rugby is also paying a separate fee for taking the Test to America.

The three Tests in South Africa had projected commercial income of R100 million to R120 million each.

These figures show why the Springboks vs All Blacks Baltimore match became the tour’s designated commercial game.

Several marketing groups competed to sell the fixture. Australian agency TEG eventually secured the Baltimore agreement.

Why Springboks and All Blacks chose the US

The United States offers something London or Dublin cannot provide as easily: a largely new audience.

SA Rugby president Rian Oberholzer said reaching new territories is a major objective. The Springboks have played only twice in America this millennium. New Zealand Rugby confirms Baltimore hosts the historic fourth Test.

The main commercial objectives include:

  • attracting new rugby supporters;
  • collecting information about American audiences;
  • testing demand for major international matches;
  • building commercial partnerships before 2031.

Baltimore therefore serves as more than a neutral venue. It becomes an early test of rugby’s expansion strategy.

World Rugby targets the US before 2031

World Rugby launched its 2026–2031 strategy in May. It plans £200 million of investment with unions across the US market.

The strategy culminates with the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2031 in the United States.

Baltimore is already among 27 cities and regions in the tournament’s applicant phase. World Rugby confirmed the list during its host selection process.

That makes M&T Bank Stadium rugby commercially useful before the World Cup. Organizers can assess ticket demand, operations and local fan engagement.

Fourth Test carries sporting stakes too

South Africa arrives in Baltimore with a 2–1 series lead. A Springboks victory would complete a 3–1 series win.

New Zealand can still level the four Tests at 2–2. The All Blacks also enter the finale without injured captain Ardie Savea.

The combination creates an unusual event. It is simultaneously an elite Test, a commercial experiment and a preview of rugby’s American ambitions.
