Xiaomi Sky Nomad marks the technology group’s first major move into extended-range electric vehicles. The project will begin with a large family SUV designed for long-distance travel, as the Baltimore Chronicle notes. Xiaomi presented Sky Nomad on July 8 as a new automotive series rather than a separate low-cost marque.
Xiaomi Sky Nomad expands the company’s electric vehicle strategy
Sky Nomad will complement Xiaomi’s existing battery-electric range. That portfolio currently includes the SU7 sedan and YU7 crossover.
Unlike those models, the new SUV will use an extended-range electric powertrain. Its petrol engine will generate electricity, while electric motors will drive the wheels.
This system could attract drivers who want electric performance without frequent charging stops. The large body and flexible cabin also target families and long-distance travellers.
What Xiaomi has confirmed about the new SUV
Xiaomi says Sky Nomad uses its new Kunlun Architecture. Development began in early 2023 and focused on adaptable interior space.
The company has not yet published complete production specifications. Current reports identify several expected characteristics:
- a full-size SUV body;
- an extended-range electric powertrain;
- flexible seating and cabin configurations;
- a combined range exceeding 1,500 km;
- a market launch expected during 2026.
The claimed range remains subject to the final test cycle and production configuration. Real-world results will also depend on speed, weather, load and driving conditions.

Expected Sky Nomad specifications
Available information provides an early outline of Xiaomi’s first EREV model. Some figures remain preliminary.
| Feature | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Vehicle type | Full-size family SUV |
| Powertrain | Extended-range electric system |
| Range extender | Expected 1.5-litre turbo engine |
| Electric range | Reportedly 400–500 km |
| Combined range | More than 1,500 km |
| Launch window | Second half of 2026 |
Independent reports suggest a body length exceeding 5.3 metres and a wheelbase near 3.1 metres. Xiaomi has not confirmed every figure in a complete technical specification sheet.
Why Sky Nomad matters for Xiaomi
The project allows Xiaomi to enter China’s competitive family SUV segment. Rivals such as Li Auto already use range-extender technology in large premium vehicles.
Sky Nomad also separates practical touring models from Xiaomi’s performance-focused electric cars. That distinction could protect the SU7 identity while broadening the company’s audience.
Pricing, battery suppliers and international availability remain undisclosed. Xiaomi plans to enter Europe, although Sky Nomad’s export schedule has not been announced.
